With hundreds of miles of trails in three mountain ranges, snowmobiling is a favorite winter pastime in Sublette County. Several events are sponsored by local enthusiasts just for a good time, but they also bring competitors from all around the Rocky Mountain region. The Winter Snowmobile Drags, held in February, and Grass Drags, held in September, attract over 100 competitors and feature trophies as well as cash prizes. The One-Lunger 100 is mostly "just for fun". The 100 mile race allows only one-cylinder machines built in 1973 or earlier. Keeping the sleds running and just finishing is the real challenge.

Fishermen and women don't put their poles away when the lakes and streams freeze over in the winter. They ice fish! Even our largest lakes in the county freeze over with 20" or more of ice in the heart of the winter season. Annual ice fishing derbies are held on Fremont and Half Moon Lakes in February and March, with the winners taking home monetary prizes for the biggest and first fish, among other categories. Fish caught include whopper Mackinaw, lake trout, cutthroat trout and rainbow trout. The Fremont Lake Ice Fishing Derby is sponsored by the Pinedale Boat Club and features a $1000 big fish prize each day.

Sublette County has strong participation and support for youth and adult ice hockey and ice skating during the winter months. Youth hockey teams exist in Pinedale and in Big Piney/Marbleton. The ice skating rinks are outdoor rinks partially funded by the Sublette County Recreation Board. Games are held from late December through March, depending on the ice conditions on the rink. Children from ages 4 through high school participate in the program and play against teams from around Wyoming and Idaho. Adult men's and woman's teams are also available. Each year, Half Moon Lake Resort on Half Moon Lake sponsors a Squirt (age 10 and under) Invitation hockey tournament played on a rink on the frozen surface of Half Moon Lake. The Learn to Skate program in Pinedale hosts the Celebration on Ice show every February showcasing ice skating talent ranging from novice to advanced.
