Our neighbors to the south began as stage stations on the Overland Trail but grew and developed as rail heads for the Union Pacific Railroad. If you take Hwy #191 south from Pinedale to Rock Springs you can just see the Killpecker Sand Dunes off to the east of the small community of Eden. These dunes can reach heights of over 100 feet and run for over 100 miles from west to east. They are home to a herd of Desert Elk, found nowhere else in North America. Another interesting side trip is the Pilot Butte Wild Horse Scenic Loop. This self-guided tour takes about 2.5 hours to drive and totals about 50 miles, half of which are on gravel roads. Turn west on CR#4-14 which is about 14 miles north of Rock Springs on Hwy 191– there is good signage; this will take you to the town of Green River. More tourism info is available at http://www.tourwyoming.com/.

The town of Green River features a Whitewater Park on the downtown stretch of the Green River; watch for kayak rodeos and river rafters. It is also the jumping off point for recreationalists headed south on WY #530 to Flaming Gorge Reservoir for fishing and boating. Head back up to Sublette County by taking WY #372 north along the Green River and through the Seedskadee National Wildlife Refuge, a bird watchers paradise!

The town of Rock Springs was named after a large spring that flowed from the rocks which disappeared when coalmining operations disrupted the flow. It still has the largest coal reserves west of the Mississippi. It is the center of energy development in the region and a major shopping and transportation hub. It is home to Western Wyoming Community College, a recreation center, historical museum and Children’s Discovery Center. The Rock Springs Chamber is at http://www.rockspringswyoming.net/.
